Abstract | Geomechanical monitoring of the Kalmakyr copper–porphyritic pitwall rock mass, consisting in surveying and geodetic measurements along three profile lines, has been carried out. Based on accuracy criteria, horizontal displacements were measured using modern geodetic electron–optical instruments and satellite technologies, and vertical displacements were determined by geometrical third-order leveling. The monitoring established the fact of neo-tectonic movement and specified displacement parameters. The horizontal displacements are 18–26 mm at average velocity of 0.25 mm/day; the vertical displacements reach 54–73 mm at average velocity of 0.8 mm/day. These data bear evidence of sufficiently high-rate tectonic movement. Based on the obtained results, stability of the Kalmakyr pitwalls is to be re-estimated considering neotectonic and modern geodynamic activity. The authors also emphasize that the existing horizontal–altimetric survey network needs modernization in pursuance of current standards, as well as new detailed examination of the pitwall rock mass is required, including surveying and geodesy measurements along new profile lines, and combination of geophysical and directional survey. The research data aggregate will allow complete idea on the actual geomechanical and geodynamic processes running on the surface and deep in rock mass. |
