Abstract

The article presents studies aimed to establish the possibility of obtaining iron ore concentrate with low phosphorus content from high-phosphorus ore (with mass fractions of iron of 43.67 % and phosphorus of 0.89 %) of the Kokbulak deposit in Kazakhstan (Northern Aral Sea region). The mineral and grain-size compositions of Kokbulak ore have been studied. According to the X-ray phase analysis data, the ore is represented by goethite-hydrogoethite, hydrogoethite, and quartz. Grain-size composition analysis has shown the highest concentration of iron for the fractions of –1.0 +0.5 and –0.5 +0.315 mm. Laboratory research was conducted to develop and test a combined process that included dry magnetic separation of ore in a strong magnetic field, oxidizing roasting of the resulting oolitic magnetic middlings at 850 °C for 60 minutes for the purpose of destruction and dehydration of oolites and activation of phosphorus in them, and subsequent dephosphorization of the roasting product by leaching with a 5 % sulfuric acid solution. The technology for removing phosphorus from brown iron ores by roasting and leaching with a weak sulfuric acid solution was selected as the most promising option, since it had successfully passed the pilot tests at Arcelor Mittal Temirtau JSC using gravity-magnetic concentrate from the Lisakovsk deposit. The process developed during the research rendered cake (final concentrate) with a yield of 91.60%. The mass fraction of iron in the cake was 58.45% and the mass fraction of phosphorus was 0.26 %, with the total recovery of iron, phosphorus, silicon, and aluminum oxides at 93.22, 20.35, 37.91, and 68.49 %, respectively.

This research was conducted under a contract concluded between the Science Committee of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Zh. Abishev Chemical and Metallurgical Institute (grant IRN No. AP19675375).
