Abstract

The Far Eastern Federal District holds more than 6000 mineral deposit, including both proven and provisionally geologically appraised minefields. The deposits contain almost all minerals entered in the Mineral Resources Balance Sheet of Russia, including strategic minerals. The region possesses ferrous, nonferrous, rare and radioactive metals; nonmetallic, coal, peat, etc. In this connection, the growth prospects of the mining industry of Russia’s Far East are assessed. Metallic mineral production in the Far Eastern District, including export, is insufficient to eliminate or reduce dependence of the local economic agents on the governmental grants. Reproduction of solid mineral resources dramatically lagged behind the needs because of the long deficiency of advanced planning and adequate geological exploration. The processing industry infrastructure is either underdeveloped or absent at all. In view of the size of the District and its remoteness from the industrial centers of Russia, the international market trends and the District’s economic self-sufficiency with the own mineral resources, it is critical in the long view to identify new strategies of mineral mining. The export-aimed concept should be denied in favor of the self-contained development of the backbone industries using the own feedstock. The proven ferrous and nonferrous metal reserves, their structure and spatial location allow creating the fundamental mineral processing centers, first of all, metallurgical (ferrous metals and copper).
