Abstract

During the step-by-step forming of thick steel sheet on the SMS Meer tube-forming press, the sheet is given the O-shape. The sheet forming is realized according to the three-point bending scheme (two lower fixed dies and one upper movable punch). However, at forming between a cylindrical (semicircular in a cross-section) punch and the cylindrical dies of press, there are always the poorly deformed non-contact almost straight sections of sheet (splines) with almost zero curvature. In order to reduce the splines’ size, it is necessary to make a large number of “blows” of punch (forming knife) at forming the sheet. In this case, the step of sheet forming is reduced, and the contact and non-contact zones of sheet forming overlap. The more steps at forming a sheet, the more the energy expenses and the cost of final product (finished pipe). In order to reduce the size of splines (respectively, to reduce the number of steps during forming and the cost of pipe), in this paper it is proposed to use the punch with two parallel half-cylinders. In this case, the sheet will be formed according to the four-point bending scheme, the punch mass will be reduced in several times, and the time of pipe’s forming into the O-shape will be significantly reduced.
