New geodynamics and oil-and-gas geology zoning of the Caspian megadepression for oil and gas prospects assessment |
Abstract |
The geodynamics and oil-and-gas geology zoning of the Caspian megadepression and in adjacent areas has been performed using the geodynamic research methods developed by the author and the retrospective basin analysis. The procedure takes into account the optimal techniques typical of the basin genetics zoning (sameness of hydrocarbon generation conditions) and to the geotectonic zoning, with identification of oil-and-gas basins–provinces and smaller chains of the zoning system. As a result of the studies, new and more correct diagrams are constructed for the oil-and-gas geology zoning of the Northern, Central and Southern Caspian areas, as well as within Azerbaijan, and are integrated into a single oil-and-gas geology zoning chart for the whole territory of the Caspian megadepression and adjacent areas. The implemented zoning carried out of the vast, structurally complex territory has identified 6 oiland-gas basins–provinces (Pre-Caspian, North Caucasus–Mangyshlak, Aral-Ustyurt, South Caspian, Transcaucasian and Amudarya). Two oil and gas subprovinces (North Caspian and Middle Kura–Kartli), as well as two independent oil and gas fields (Dibrar and Nakhichevan) have been detected. In all major chains, oil-and-gas-bearing and promising oil-and-gas areas, as well as oil and gas accumulations are recognized. The developed chart of the optimized oil-and-gas geology zoning in combination with other oil and gas potential criteria can serve as a reliable framework for the oil and gas prospects assessment and development of ways of further search and exploration of hydrocarbon pockets and deposits in the territory of the Caspian megadepression and in adjacent areas. |
