Abstract

An important role in the steel production is played by technical and economic indicators of melting, such as consumption of raw materials, energy resources and auxiliary materials. In the conditions of strict competition, metal producers are looking for any new opportunities to reduce specific expenses per ton of steel, paying thereby special attention to the quality of manufactured metal. In this connection, the specialists of the Taganrog metallurgical plant use the additives of hot briquette iron (HBI) as metal charge during the steelmaking process in electric arc furnaces (EAF). It is displayed that HBI is a good alternative to pig iron and expensive kind of scrap. In 2015–2017, the analysis of infl uence of such HBI additives on the steel quality and technological parameters of melting has been carried out in the electric steel melting shop of the plant. This paper presents the results showing that the increase of HBI share in the metal charge leads to elevation of purity of manufactured steel semiproducts and shows at the same time deterioration of some technological melting parameters.
