Abstract

The paper is dedicated to the issues of new equipment application for beneficiation of wet and adhesive materials — solid municipal waste (SMW) with a view to produce low-ash secondary fuel. The task consists in removing ash fractions (glass, non-combustible screenings and small-size inert fractions), keeping maximum content of fuel calorie constituent. A roller type separator for solid municipal waste has been developed at the Research and Engineering Corporation «Mekhanobr-Tekhnika», the device simultaneously realizes two functions: glass disintegration and efficient separation of glass and small-size non-burning fractions as undersize at 50 mm size fraction. An experimental prototype separator with one deck plate of 2.35 m2 screening area was produced for testing perposes. Aperture size is 52 mm, rollers rotational frequency — 100–180 min–1. The results of the tests performed on model material, similar in composition and properties to real SMW, are presented. Oversize was subjected to a second run of separation, with a view to simulate operation results of a machine with two screening deck plates. The tests demonstrated a high efficiency of screening, revealing the advantages of the separator in question — wet and adhesive materials are easily screened, high yield of fuel fractions, significant recovery of glass may be achieved through selection of efficient operating regimes. It is shown, that application of separator with two screening deck plates considerably improves the results. Using model SMW material, recovery of glass was 26 and 59 %, with clean glassware — 38–76 and 63–92 % with one and two screening deck plates, respectively. The achieved throughput rate complies with the requirements of fuel production process from SMW.
