Against the background of what the steel industry, the material steel and its properties as well as products made of steel contribute to resource efficiency and recycling, the authors examine the current political developments. This is done on a national and European level for both, resource efficiency on the one hand and environmental protection on the other. On the basis of conflicts with regard to the slags produced during steelmaking due to thermodynamic reasons, the question whether resource efficiency and recycling are politically desirable is comprehensible. The solution requires a holistic approach. Anchoring this in politics and in the awareness of the public is a major challenge. It is necessary for politicians to understand the things really, based on practical experience and natural laws, on physical and thermodynamical regulations. In this connection it is clear that correct usage of slag-based materials is not dangerous for soil and water with parallel saving essential amount of resources. The distinct support of the industry from the side of politicians and authorities is strictly required for getting approval of society. Integrated approach in the policy is based on early employment and mutual influencing effects that will promote the required measures in different fields, including legislative initiatives.
