Abstract | The paper is devoted to examination of the problem, if productivity has to be the basic priority in operation of a steelmaking shop, or it is also important to concentrate on lowering of the expenses? It is shown that both directions can be taken into account. The 100-t electric arc furnace at the plant of Hellenic Halyvourgia can be considered as the practical example of such technical solution, when the idea and the basic concept will lead to the tested, flexible and efficient construction. The history of development of this furnace until present time and achieved results are presented. It is shown that the electric arc furnace of Sharc type has been developed together by HLV company and SMS Group and is a new stage in electric steelmaking relating to its productivity, power efficiency and environment protection. It is concluded that fruitful collaboration between the metallurgical plant and the engineering machine-building company summarizes the experts’ knowledges and opens good prospects for further innovations, Sharc-type construction of the furnace and advanced melting technology provides high productivity, while technological flexibility provides minimal expenses in the process of steelmaking. |
