Abstract

Mineral wealth is the basis for development of a national economy and the natural advantage for a country to ensure prosperity of nation. The growing consumption of mineral wealth in the 21st century requires a new mineral policy of governments. The world’s top mineral producers (countries mining more than 30 kinds of mineral resources) total mere 10 states. Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan were among the leading countries before joining CIS, and this time Kazakhstan, unlike Kyrgyzstan, has kept its position. The comparative analysis of possibilities of mining different kinds of minerals uses the case studies of Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan. Kyrgyzstan possesses several thousands of mineral deposits and mineralizations. The state register contains 199 explored deposits of 37 kinds of minerals. Kazakhstan’s state register embraces 102 kinds of minerals, including 40 kinds of hard minerals. The mining industry in Kyrgyzstan is mainly represented by Kumtor project. It totals 5.4 % in GDP of the country. Kumtor is one of the world’s unique gold deposits, with gold content of 731 t according to present knowledge, and is among the world’s ten largest gold deposits. The incomings from the Kumtor Operating Company make one tenth in GDP of Kyrgyzstan and one half of the revenue of the overall industry. The mineral resources of Kazakhstan are strategic and critical as they count for up to 70 % in GDP and make the best part in the foreign exchange receipts. Kazakhstan is a large exporter of energy feedstock, ferrous, nonferrous and noble metals. In particular, Kazakhstan produces 41 % of uranium and 16 % of chromium in the world. A feature of prescheduled geological exploration in the short term is the introduction of the advanced aero- and geophysical surveying of areas meant for mining, geochemical mapping using the slip-form method and the remote sensing. All of the mentioned works are supported from the state budget.
