A positive trend in the dynamics of basic macro-economic factors was observed in the CIS in 2013, although the rate of growth was slower than in 2012. The gross domestic product grew by 2%, industrial production output — by 0.3% and the fixed asset formation — by 0.9%. The mining and metallurgical industry is the prime economic sector that has a deep influence on the performance of the fuel-and-energy complex, machine building, construction and other industries. In 2013 the output of the metallurgy products and ready commodities increased in Azerbaijan, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova and Uzbekistan, while it decreased in Belarus, Kazakhstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Ukraine. The total export delivery of metal products in the CIS countries made USD 70,9 billion and import deliveries — USD 41 billion. The export volume decreased in the CIS countries, with its maximum reduction in Russia and Kazakhstan. Per cent drop in the nonferrous industry in the CIS countries, %: lead — 15; aluminum — 9; copper, nickel zinc — within 2–3. The mining and metallurgical industry of Russia is one of the largest industries in the world, providing 13% of the overall industrial production in Russia and 8% of the Russian export in the form of metal products in 2013. The nonferrous metallurgy is represented by over 500 plants and took 2.3% in the gross domestic product, 4% in the industrial production and 3.6% in the export in Russia in 2013. The production of gold and platinum, aluminum-based alloys and products, aluminum and copper foil, cobalt, titanium and magnesium grew. However the production of primary aluminum, refine copper, nickel, zinc and lead decreased as compared with 2012. The investment activities in 2013 were concerned with accomplishment of a number of large projects on commissioning of new manufacturing capacities, revitalization of earlier large projects on copper, aluminum and gold production, and commencement of construction of a plant for chargeable cell reprocessing and refined lead production. The review is prepared using the data of the Interstate Statistical Committee of the CIS, national statistical services in the CIS countries, Bulletin of Foreign Commercial Information, industrial publications and websites of industrial manufacturers.
