Abstract | In 2010 and 2011, Essar Steel India extended its production capacity at the Hazira location in the Indian federal state of Gujarat by 5 million t/a of crude steel and another 3.5 million t/a of hot rolled strip. The pertaining plant technology was provided by SMS Siemag and consists of two 200-t Conarc furnaces, three twin ladle furnaces and a CSP plant. The CSP plant started operation with two strands and will be extended to become the world’s first three-strand CSP plant. Its production range covers thin sheet with 1.0-25.4 mm thickness and 950–1680 mm width from 55–80 mm thick slabs. SMS Siemag supplied the mechanical equipment and the entire X-Pact electrical and automation systems for this plant and was responsible for the supervision of erection and commissioning. This article describes the plant technology and presents the most important operating results in the commissioning phase. Modernization of steelmaking facilities is described. It is concluded that combination of proved technological models and adjusting contours adopted to the mechanical equipment, as well as optimal “Plug and Work” tes ting preparing provided reaching the aimed results in very narrow time: 100% productivity was achieved after 250 days of operation. In its turn, it was the additional cause for satisfaction of the customer. |
