Abstract | The system of criteria and indices of high oil and gas bearing capacity of Russian Arctic shelf was the theoretical base for oil and gas prospecting work within Barents and Kara seas during 1970-s. The system was developed by geologists from Arctic Research Institute and other geological institutes under the leadership of distinguished scientist and future academician I. S. Gramberg. These criteria were later evolved in the conception of Arctic oil and gas bearing superbasin providing a possibility for the comprehensive approach for the certain Arctic basins classification and possess high forecast potential. Enhanced scientific-methodological support of marine geological exploration promoted high efficiency of the exploration process as a whole (27 commercial deposits as on 2011). At the same time, a variety of fundamental problems of oil and gas bearing capacity are expected to be solved (the role of syn-oceanic stage, tectonic origin of some structural units, trends of phase hydrocarbon composition change). As for the low studied Eastern Arctic shelf, unified system of geo-historical concept and generally accepted taxonomy of main structures have not been developed yet. Deep water basins of the Arctic Ocean are still slide over field for the fundamental oil and gas geological research. |
