Abstract | The new German Energy Policy calls for extensive savings of energy within all parts of society and economy. Within the iron and steel industry the continuous improvement of the energy efficiency is of great importance for the success of the industry. Power engineering flows and use of process gases within an integrated steelworks with coke oven, blast furnace and power station as well as energy management in the German iron and steel industry are analyzed and necessary measurements for a balance sheet of energy flows are presented. Specific consumption of reducing agents for the production of iron in German blast furnaces and aimed parameters of the German power engineering policy, including climate, recyclable power engineering and energy efficiency are generalized. Therefore, Energy Management Systems operating according to DIN EN ISO 50001 are used today in order to identify the possibilities for improvements and to reduce the energy consumption continuously. Simplified principles of operation of this system are explained. Energy Management Systems have to be installed, too, if energy taxes shall be repaid. The paper describes a significant energy saving that has been obtained within projects of the Energy Management System at the flare stack of the steelworks HKM, located near Duisburg. Measures to reduce the energy losses of an excess gas burner in the steelworks of HKM, Duisburg are described. Another example is observed on the base of the flow sheet of the process gases in the ArcelorMittal steelworks at Eisenhüttenstadt. |
