Nowadays, Komi Republic has a wide natural-reserved fund, which includes the federally significant specially protected natural areas, 238 regionally significant objects and 37 locally significant objects. Total area of natural reservations covers 5.6 mln. ha, which is near 13.5% of Republican territory. Regional specially protected natural areas include 164 state nature reserves, 73 natural monuments and one protected natural landscape, which covers an area of 3 mln. ha. Pechora-Ilyich state nature reserve was formed more than 80 years ago. At the same time, there was started the formation of range of specially protected natural areas. History of development of system of regional specially protected natural areas was started later and covers nearly 50 years. Each stage of development of range of regional protected areas has its own peculiarities:
- on the first stage, there was carried out a work on mass revelation and creation of natural-reserved fund objects;
- on the second stage, there were abolished the territories, which are completely included in composition of more large reservations, or stopped to answer to the purposes and tasks of functioning of specially protected natural areas.
Continuous work on improvement of rules and regulations of specially protected natural areas is the common peculiarity. Nowadays, it is possible to talk about the beginning of new stage of reconstruction of system of specially protected natural areas for the purpose of more efficient saving of landscapes and biological variety.
