Gornyi Zhurnal

March 2019 issue of Mining Journal (No. 3, 2019) is special. It offers an ample description of Karelia’s mineral resources and outlines prospects for their integrated development.

The issue opens with an address by A. O. Parfenchikov, Head of the Republic of Karelia. He highlights the significance of scientific research for pursuing advanced mining and processing in the Republic. Such research has been implemented by the Institute of Geology under auspices of the Kola Science Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Fellows of the Institute have made contributions for the present issue.

Based on the issue’s subject, the most part of the articles appear in the Section: Natural Resources of Karelia. Here, and emphasis is laid on the description of nonmetallics which govern the mining industry profile in the Republic. Furthermore, much attention is given to noble and rare metal potential of Karelia.

The other sections of this issue list achievements in the field of mineral processing and multipurpose utilization as well as further research trends in this respect, evaluate transformation of natural environment in the impact zones of mining and generalize opencast stone mining experience gained in the Republic. Naturalists might be interested in the article about history of iron ore mining by peasants in Karelia.
