Chernye Metally

The 4th issue of “Chernye Metally” journal (2017) contains the most of its conventional sections. It is opened, as usual, by the section “Iron and steel news of the world” and “News of metallurgical companies”.

The section “Ironmaking” makes the readers acquainted with innovations of Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH in the field of radar-locating measurements in the blast furnace. The new sensors are more cheap, efficient and reliable in comparison with the measuring systems mounted in 2005.

The section “Steel making” presents calculations for determination of metal scrap volume using 3-D camera with time-of-flight sensor in the conditions of Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works. Another article in this section is devoted to modern tendencies of refractory production providing implementation of the efficient melting processes for high-quality steels.

Review of AHSS steels with increased Mn content and evaluation of potential opportunities for manufacturing products of these steels are presented by Primetals Technologies in the section “Continuous Casting”. Production of hot-rolled strip is realized here by ESP (Endless Strip Production) Arvedi technology.

P. Paderin, technical expert of the United metallurgical company has discussed in his article necessity of development of thermodynamics of carbon solutions in liquid iron. The quasi-regular solution model of carbon at all its concentration values in liquid iron was built in order to calculate carbon activity in temperature range 1400 °C – 1600 °C.

Metal forming thematics is presented in this issue by publications about the calculation method for sheet straightening force parameters in 8-roll unit (National University of Science and Technology “MISiS”), about putting into practice the new adjusting concept for hot rolling finishing stands (Primetals Technologies), about cross-wedge rolling with 20% steel saving (IPH Institute), about Scada quality control system during rolls heat treatment (Siemens AG).

The leaching technology allowing to extract titanium carbide from waste materials is described in the section “Power engineering and ecology”.

The issue also includes publications in the following sections: “Steel as material” and “Economics and finances”.
