The issue begins with the section “Ore Preparation” that includes, among others, the paper by V. A. Arsentyev, et al., dedicated to thermal modification of high-ash mineral coal with a view to change its physical-chemical properties, thus providing conditions for subsequent dry beneficiation of coal, which is a promising way to improve processing technology applied to this type of mineral. In a point of fact, dry beneficiation of coal is one of the themes of the XVIIIth International Congress of Coal Beneficiation held in St. Petersburg at the end of June, 2016.
The section “Processing Technology” includes two papers devoted to the subject of beneficiation of nepheline raw materialswith the purpose to produce alumina. The first paper (byA. O. Mezenin, et al.) presents a comparative assessment of processing flow sheets applied for accomplishment of this task: magnetic-flotation, wet or dry magnetic separation. The assessment of the main technical-and-economic indexes of nepheline ores processing alternatives showed, that tentative economic effectiveness of dry magnetic separation significantly exceeds the wet processes efficiency. Economic effectiveness of both wet magnetic and magnetic-flotation processing is characterized by similar values, but taking into consideration a higher grade of concentrates, a combination process may be expected to be more efficient. In the second paper (byТ. N. Mukhina, et al.) by the example ofthe Goryachegorskoye nepheline-feldspar depositores processing it is shown, that the highest processing results are achieved with application of combined magnetic-flotation technology, however, the final choice of processing flow sheet may be made upon accomplishment ofdesign studies andtechnical and economic assessment.
The papers in the section “Beneficiation processes” are dedicated to the equipment testing in different hardrock gold and placer gold processing operations. Jameson Cell flotation machine tests in the Bakyrchikskoye deposit gold bearing ores carbon flotation operation (the paper by V. N. Kovalev, et al.) did not reveal serious processing advantages, related to application of mechanical-air flotation machines, if compared with more conventional equipment, however, with comparable processing results, operational advantages of the former are significant, permitting to recommend this equipment for commercial introduction. In another experimental study, “Alaska-35” washing plantsluice boxes and jigging machines operation optimization on a gold placer deposit permitted the authors (the paper by V. S. Litvintsev, P. P. Sas) to decrease metal losses in tailings to 11 %.
The paper (А. М. Vasilyev, V. V. Frolov) in the section “Methods of analysis in beneficiation process” proposes a general-purpose method developed for performance of sieve analyses by means of shakers (analyzers) of different design. The proposed sequence of actions permits to obtain on different analyzers the same data for the same ore sample regardless of apparatus type and ore physical properties.
The information upon the Scientific and Technical Research Council “Thickening, hydrotransport and storage of thickened tailings – 2016” is complemented by the paper based on the data and materials of one of the papers, presented at this event. The author (A. V. Bauman) through the statistical review of process audit results on more than a hundred upgraded and newly constructed concentrating plants showed, that at two-out-of-three plants commissioning problems were related to errors in design and arrangement of thickening circuits and return water systems. The paper considers main examples of such errors, presents an analysis of the reasons for occurrence of errors and proposes ways for risk minimization in process and design concepts at designing stage.
