Chernye Metally
The 4th issue of "Chernye Metally" journal (2014) is opened by with the new section "News of metallurgical companies" observes innovations of ThyssenKrupp tailored Blanks, Bruker Elemental GmbH, Polytec GmbH and Th. Scholten GmbH & Co.
The essential part of this issue is occupied be the section devoted to the 115th anniversary of St. Petersburg State Polytechnic University; it includes 13 articles. It is opened by the publication "The input of the lecturers of Polytechnic institute in teaching of metallurgical engineers in 1907-1930" by A. I. Demidov.
The paper "The main directions of improvement of ecological parameters in iron and steel production" by I. V. Butorina makes emphasize on the idea that that the environmental program of metallurgical enterprise should be based on life cycle analysis. The priority should be given to the primary activities reducing energy consumption and formation of wastes, what will help to decrease a load on the environment.
Prof. M. R. Konevskiy discusses the actual problems of complex processing of phosphorus iron ores and phosphorites, arising due to lack of impurities-free iron ore. The author proposes different measures for the rational use of depleted phosphate slags: by deoxidation remaking to ferro-phosphorus and its use as a reducing agent of the rest of the slag.
Three articles are presented by prof. A. A. Kazakov and his colleagues from the chair "Metallurgical technologies". The first one - "Distribution pattern of nonmetallic inclusions on the cross-section of continuous-cast steel billets for rails and wheels" - states the conclusion that maximum nonmetallic impurity rating has been detected at the boundary intersection of adjacent crystal structure zones. The method of sampling for the control of nonmetallic inclusions in continuous-cast steel billets for rails and wheels has been developed based upon revealed relationships which correlates good with a sampling for end products: wheels and rails.
The second paper prepared by A. A. Kazakov and his co-authors describes investigation of the nature of nonmetallic inclusions in HSLA steels using an automatic particle analyzer. The novelty of this approach is that the databases of inclusion compositions obtained, together with number of analyzed particles and thermodynamic modeling methods, allows the steelmaker to determine the specific nature of inclusions created taking into account the thermal, hydrodynamic and physical-chemical processes occurring in the liquid and the solidifying steel.
The last publication in this area by prof. A. A. Kazakov, P. V. Kovalev, S. V. Ryaboshuk, A. E. Kozlov, M. V. Zhiron-kin, A. V. Krasnov is entitled "Control of nonmetallic inclusions formation during converter steel production". The authors have been studied the nature of formation and special evolution features of nonmetallic inclusions during ladle refining of converter HSLA steels for pipelines. Twenty five heats were carried out according to recommendations and the specimens from 128 hot-rolled plates were investigated for evaluation of nonmetallic impurity rating of steel.
V. M. Golod and K. I. Emelyanov have observed the concept of the two-stage evolution of equiaxed dendritic crystallites during non-equilibrium solidification of multi-component iron-based alloys. The developed method of numerical analysis of dendritic solidification can be used to improve estimates of the parameters of solidification process as predictors structure in order to improve the adequacy of the forecast models.
Metal failure probability state-of-the-art technique assessment during hot rolling by means of combined physical and numerical simulation was developed by M. A. Matveev and his colleagues. It was shown that failure possibility can be initiated by the existence defects in initial slab and not optimized temperature and deformation schedules. Presented technique can be used for other metal plastic deformation applications.
The article "Development and research of the process for producing high-speed steel powder rods" is devoted to the technology of hot extrusion of such steels in hermetic capsules has an advantage compare to technology of hot gas-static pressing. Technological parameters of powder material in steel capsule extrusion are determined in present research by means of numerical simulation.
V. A. Karkhin, V. V. Tsukanov, E. V. Novikov, P. N. Khomich have developed mathematical model governing hydrogen diffusion in ingots accounts for the size of the ingot, non-isothermal conditions and austenite-pearlite transformations. It has been shown that radial distribution of hydrogen concentration after the completion of the treatment in accordance with both variants remains virtually unchanged. Hydrogen concentration in the center of the ingot reaches the maximum, which is 57 % of initial concentration, while 64 % of the initial volume of hydrogen stays in the ingot.
The paper by V. P. Yurkinskiy, L. P. Baturova, E. G. Firsova displays the research results ofthe corrosion resistance ofstainless steels(AISI) SS316, 254 and 354 in deaerated sodium hydroxide melt at temperatures of 400–600 ○C, and the article by S. L. Ratushnyak, N. O. Gonchukova, T. V. Larionova, O. V. Tolochko observes rapid quenching of the melt with subsequent heat treatment and evaluation of time-temperature regimes of heat treatment of amorphous alloys with the purpose to form amorphous-nanocrystalline structure by using the model description of stress relaxation in amorphous metallic alloys.
The last publication in the section of St. Petersburg State Technical University is "Features of plastic deformation and wear of abrasive grains at high-speed machining" by M. P. Skotnikova, N. A. Krylov, G. V. Tsvetkova, E. K. Ivanov, A. V. Sokolov. It is shown that reduction of transversal dimensions of guide mark, chips and their segments, as well as increase of back turns between them, are observed with increase in hardness of processed materials, decrease of their ability to deformation hardening, along with lowering of hardness of abrasive tool and increase of micro-cutting speed over 40 m/s.
Usual set of German articles contains the paper "Efficient strip cooling to meet requirements of advanced steel grades" prepared by the specialists of SMS Siemag AG and the article "From logging of pipelines to power efficiency" by C. Theodoro from Endress + Hauser Messtechnik GmbH & Co. KG.
The issue also includes the sections "Steel as material", "Economics and finances" and "Metallurgy and art".
