A number of leading petroleum geologists have been studying the oil and gas potential of the Mesozoic deposits in Azerbaijan for many decades. The results of some exploration work on the Mesozoic deposits have been successful in some cases. For example, significant oil and gas flows were obtained from the Middle Albian sandstones in the Caspian–Guba oil and gas region in the 1940s–1950s. Later, an industrial gas flow was obtained from the Middle Jurassic in the same region. In addition, industrial oil flows were also obtained from the effusive and carbonate sediments of the Upper Cretaceous in the Yevlakh part of the Agjabedi region. However, despite the significant volume of deep drilling in the Mesozoic and the industrial oil flows obtained, there is still not enough data on the main criteria for oil and gas potential. In particular, comparison of the data of well bore geophysics and surface seismic exploration showed that in most oil and gas regions only the upper parts of the Cretaceous were exposed, while the general structure of the Mesozoic remained unclear. Therefore, it is additionally necessary to conduct targeted, detailed seismic explorations in prospective areas in order to identify and prepare the Mesozoic structures for exploratory drilling. At the same time, of no less interest is the clarification of the lithofacies composition and architecture of reservoirs, overlying seals, oil and gas potential of separate intervals of the section, types of structures on the path of the hydrocarbon migration flow, etc. This work is devoted to the consideration of some of the noted criteria for the Mesozoic deposits in the Caspian–Guba oil and gas region in Azerbaijan. The data obtained are based on the results of core samples tests of real rocks from a wide lithofacies series of effusive and carbonate sediments.
