This article discusses a method for writing technical scientific articles known as IMRAD. It involves a strict structure for presenting the material, as well as the requirement to write in impersonal, strict, and unambiguous language. Examples are provided to illustrate the widespread use of this method in scientific journals specializing in mining and metallurgy. Observations indicate that many authors do not consider IMRAD requirements mandatory and instead follow their own logic of presentation. Possible reasons for using this method are discussed, as well as its connection to scientific common sense based on the tenets of positivism. Positivist scientific common sense is difficult to criticize, as it constitutes a familiar and routinely used, coherent system. It is argued that impersonal language is not specifically objective. It is shown that positivism currently underlies the teaching of science in technical universities. The author of the article comes to the conclusion that technoscientists will be forced to resort to a “metaphysical” discussion of the problems of science if they do not want to completely hand it over to external control.
