Water supply facilities are high energy consuming systems. The deeper-level mining and the increased capacity of water intake facilities results in even higher energy consumption. Expedient selection of an electric drive type is important for the power economy as this operating component of a pumping unit governs the type, the number, the price and the efficiency of electric installations in use. One of the key factors in economically efficiency management of water intakes is the appropriate choice of an electric drive type. Thus, this article examines optimized and energysaving methods to operate electric drives of centrifugal pumps. Furthermore, cavitation in pumps can induce noise and vibrations in pumping equipment, abrupt change in properties of the medium, erosion and electrochemical corrosion of pumps and, eventually, failure of the pumping equipment. Cavitation in pumps causes harmful aftereffects. The causes of cavitation and their elimination in centrifugal pumps are discussed. The automated start of the variable speed drive–asynchronous motor system used a program which ensured creation of mathematical and simulation models of rated duty, pressure metering and control at inlet and outlet pipes and plotting of characteristics of pumping units. On the basis of the designed program, the operating mode of the electric drive of centrifugal pumps was optimized. The introduction of the centrifugal pumps with the variable speed drive–asynchronous motor automation allowed reduction of the starter current by 2.5 times and extension of the maintenance-free period of life of the machines from 6–7 to 25 months. |
