The competitiveness of a large mining or metallurgical company is determined by many factors, most generally formulated in the Matrix of Competitive Forces and Factors, introduced into practice in the second half of the twentieth century by Michael Porter. This article examines the aspect of achieving strategic competitiveness by a large mining company through ensuring technological leadership. Based on an analysis of global and advanced Russian experience, a model for organizing the business process of ensuring technological leadership employing the proposed rational system is proposed. This model allows for the most efficient implementation of algorithms for searching and determining strategic vectors for technological development, employs a systemic analysis of market trends and all emerging technologies, not only in terms of applicability in the industry, but also in terms of the impact on business of global trends, changes in global markets, social structure, social factors and new technologies in other areas of life. The analysis of the innovative and technological prospects of a particular technology or idea is only a small part of factors considered in the strategic investment decision making process. So, the role and logic of integrating scientific and innovative activities into the general system of business processes in a large company is based on how the flow of corporate proposals for innovative development is managed. The specificity of large manufacturing companies in the logic of making internal corporate investment decisions in the areas of scientific, technological and innovative development is indicated, which differs from the classic algorithm for attracting venture capital or the practice of business incubators.
