The development of the coal industry in the Rostov Region over the period 2000–20205 is analyzed with regard to production of coking and power-generating coal, shipment of coal, investments in capital stock of coal mines and average prices per ton of shipped product. In the late two years, production of Rostov coal grew from 1.5 Mt in 2016 to 5 Mt in 2017. The best part of coal produced in the Rostov Region is exported: the coal export in 2017 made 45.7 % of the total coal production output in the region (higher by 190 % as against 2016). Due to the economic recession in 2011–2016, the shipped coal price decreased. The average maker’s price of power-generating coal produced in the Rostov Region in 2017 were $60.9/t. Investment in the capital stock of Rostov’s mines reduced by 5.9 % in 2017 as against 2016 (in US dollars). The prospects for the coal power generation in the Rostov Region are discussed. In December 2017 the fourth power-generating unit was actuated at the Rostov Atomic Power Station, while windpower engineering and wind parks enjoy extensive development. The thermal plants scheduled for the commissioning in Simferopol and Sevastopol and capable to supply the Crimea Peninsula will also contribute to reduction in demand for Rostov coal. The authors propose forecasts of coal production outputs and prices for three scenarios of economic development in Russia until 2025. |
