One of the ways of improving continuous heading machines is optimization of patterns of cutters on longitudinally and transversely rotation cutting heads in order to reduce dynamic impact on them when in operation. This article presents a procedure for optimization of cutter pattern on a cutting head based on the method of LP-search. In the capacity of an optimality criterion for a cutter pattern, the coefficient of variation of resisting moment on a head, and position of each cutter has four characteristic parameters: diameter of cutter orientation; axial distance from the cutting head face to a cutter; angular coordinate and cutter angle. The variable parameters are the shape of a cutting head and its maximum length, number of spirals and number of cutters. A pattern of cutters is determined by setting a coefficient of turns of spiral with evenly or unevenly arranged cutters. Based on the procedure, an investigation algorithm is developed, including a series of computations with regard to the formulated design constraints. The procedure and algorithm are included in an application program. The program is meant for a computer-aided multi-variant search of designs of cutting heads for continuous heading machines. A universal structure flow chart of a cutting head is presented. A cutting head is designed as a sequence of chains characterized by length and predisplacement angle. Generation of a structure flow chart and assignment of properties of rocks as well as types and setting parameters of cutters and shapes of cutting heads precedes the process of cutter arrangement. The presented theoretical research findings have been implemented at Kopeysk Machine-Building Plant in the form of a prototype of transversely rotating cutting head for continuous heading machine KP21-150. The manufacturer’s trial demonstrated efficiency of the new cutting head parameters determined using the developed procedure for cutter patterns.
