Manufacturing of freight railroad cars for bulk cargo transportation sets a task about junction of aluminium alloy sheets (4–6 mm thickness) by long welds. Lap joints are preferable for sheets junction, in terms of simplification of technological process of sheeting manufacturing (freight car sheeting, for example). The purpose of this work is research of structure and mechanical properties of lap joints of aluminium alloy 1565chM (1565чМ) sheets (5 mm thickness), obtained by argon-arc and friction stir welding. Before welding process, samples were cleaned by mechanical metallic brush with wires' diameter of 0.8 mm. Horizontal milling machine Agile CS 1000, equipped by special tool for this welding type, was used for friction stir welding of lap joints. Strength of one-weld lap joints is significantly lower than strength of two-weld lap joints. During the tension tests, friction stir joints are destructed by heat affected zone, while weld metal destruction appears during the argon-arc welding. Friction stir lap joints of 1565chM alloy sheets (5 mm thickness) have an equal strength with butt joints (strength coefficient is 0,96–0,98). At the same time, strength of lap joints, obtained by manual argon arc welding, is considerably lower than butt joint strength (particularly, with one-weld lap joint). |
