This article considers the questions of compliance of mechanical engineering industry to new requirements of modernization and innovation development of the economics of Kemerovo region. On the basis of the SWOT-analysis, there is given the assessment of the status of main production factors of regional economics. The structure of regional mechanical engineering industry is shown along with the nature of dependence of the products from the basic coal and metallurgical industries. The main benefits and threats to development of regional mechanical engineering are identified. The modernization algorithm of mechanical engineering industry is proposed along with its main processes: modernization of production process; organization of high-efficient and high-paid jobs; transformation of labor market; modernization of the system of engineering education; manufacturing of the competitive products (as a result). The factors of negative trends in the current state of industry are researched along with the vector of further development. There are defined the following basic factors of a destructive status of regional mechanical engineering: lack of horizontal connections; dependence of machine-building enterprises from the policy of large holdings; lack of investments; undeveloped cooperation with scientific and educational systems, etc. The key factor is the low level of staff composition and competencies of human resources. There is set a problem of creation of a specialized moderator, which will be able to coordinate and solve the identified problems in the development of regional mechanical engineering.
