The September 2020 Issue 9 of Mining Journal is specially on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the Kola Science Center and to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Mining Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
The Center and the Institute both engage themselves in basic and applied research connected with integrated development of mineral resources. The research findings are in high demand and unceasingly enjoy application in mining, processing and metallurgy in the Murmansk Region.
This issue of Mining Journal provides the readers with an opportunity to have a look at history of the Kola Science Center and the Mining Institute, to know on contribution of research and development to the mining industry advancement in Russia and to learn about state-of-the-art of R&D activities.
The issue ends with an article entitled The Soviet Khibiny: Industrial Miracle in the Mirror of Leningrad Porcelain which tells on the USSR’s industrialization and modernization breakthrough mirrored in the Soviet porcelain production in the 1930s. Porcelain dinnerware sets Khibinogorsk (1933–1934), Kirovsk Apatit (1935) and Kirovsk (1935) as well as vase Social Construction (1933) in the collection of the State Hermitage Museum are both masterpieces of art and ‘living’ witnesses of national history. The pieces of these dinnerware sets depict industrial factories and public buildings of the town of Kirovsk, many being vanished thus far, or are reconstructed beyond recognition, and, moreover, portraits of people who embodied that ambitious development and made a real-world town to stem from just their desire.
