Revamped walking beam furnace at OneSteel Whyalla, Australia, in operation with good results

SMS group received the final acceptance certificate for the revamp of a walking beam furnace from OneSteel Whyalla, Australia, in January 2016. After revamp and restart the old furnace uses less fuel and can be finally operated with all the benefits of a modern automation. Furthermore, the furnace combustion system has been updated to the latest safety regulations applicable in Australia. The revamp has been carried out completely by SMS Meer SpA, Italy, a subsidiary of SMS group.

In Australia, SMS completed the revamp of the venerable and flimsy 200 tons per hour walking beam furnace at Whyalla section mill. All burners have been replaced with brand new units, helping to decrease the emission of dangerous NO_x chemicals. SMS engineers made their way in the maze of the existing pipelines and old cabling, succeeding to arrange the new electrical and mechanical equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
