Online roughness measurement and materials testing: Six EMG quality assurance systems for Shandong Iron and Steel Rizhao

The Shandong Iron and Steel Group is constructing a flat steel complex in the Shandong province on the East coast of China, which consists of a line for hot-rolled sheet material, a coupled pickling tandem mill, as well as a hot-dip galvanising line and two continuous annealing lines. The SMS Group is supplying the automation and electrical systems for all of the installations. Production is scheduled to start in 2017.

Within this project, the SMS group has commissioned EMG Automation GmbH to supply a laser optical online roughness measurement system (SORM 3plus) and a pulse magnetic online materials testing system (IMPOC) for the hot-dip galvanising line and the two annealing lines.

In addition to the production of tube grades and cold-rolled strip for the construction and household appliance industries, the focus of Shandong Iron and Steel Rizhao is also on sophisticated steel grades for the automotive industry. The 2 million tons of cold-rolled strip material produced every year is available in widths up to 1850 mm and with tensile strengths of up to 1000 MPa.

In addition to optimising and monitoring the production chain for the steel manufacturer, the data generated by the EMG solutions for online roughness measurement and materials testing also play a particularly important role from a tribological point of view in optimising the pressing process for the subsequent treatment of automotive steel. Shandong Iron and Steel Rizhao's investment in the six quality assurance systems from EMG ensures it is extremely well prepared for its role as a premium supplier to the automotive industry.

EMG's online measuring systems for surface roughness EMG SORM 3plus and material properties (tensile strength and yield point) EMG IMPOC are currently being used in more than one hundred applications around the world. The two systems are increasingly being used in combination in order to obtain as complete a picture as possible of the key quality parameters for the finishing process over the length and width of the strip material. The harmonisation of EMG's underlying hardware and software ensures the user is able to use and operate the systems easily and efficiently.
