Abstract

At the end of the 1990-s, the state unitary enterprise "Radon" constructed two new type storages (the SBD-1 and SBD-2) on the basis of large-size, 40 meters deep holes and started researchings of the characteristics of the storages costoding peculiarity of middle and low activity radioactive wastes, endurance and durability of engineering barriers, defining both the containing array, and of the degree of these structures environmental safety.

One of the main technological elements and, at the same time, protective engineering barriers of these storages is a steel casing bearing supporting column (steel “3sp” State Standart 535-88) with 1,5 m internal diameter, consisting of several sections, made of metal with 12 to 20 mm thickness, connected by the use of welding. Casing column is aimed to containing massif load perception, storage hermiticity assurance during its operation life, and, as a result, excluding the possible migration of radionuclides with groundwaters, beyond its limit.

The second metal engineering barrier is the standard packing barrel, which surround a cement matrix with radioactive waste. The thickness of the wall, bottom and barrel cover the barrel is 1,8 mm.

These two metal engineering barriers are corrodable.

According to the research results, designed operation life of storage holls (SBD-1 and SBD-2) is 30 years, whereupon it should be made a decision of the explotation extension or decommissioning. It should be noted that the corrosion study models, deliberately had not been protected by corrosion-resistant coating for the purpose of obtaining the corrosion characteristics in pure form.
