Abstract The effect of additional grinding duration of strontium hexaferrite powder produced by Olkon JSC on the microstructure and properties of powder-based products has been studied. We show that additional ball mill grinding of the source powder greatly increases the particle size distribution homogeneity and the activity of the particles due to the induction of microstrain in the crystal lattice. Powder quality improvement produces a homogeneous fine-grained as-sintered microstructure in contrast to the heavily inhomogeneous microstructure with island-type grain size variation obtained from source powder. Optimum additional grinding duration of 8 h and sintering at 1230 oC increased the magnetic properties of strontium hexaferrite by 14—17 %.
