Abstract

A calculation analysis of the effect of out-of-furnace treatment of cast iron and steel on the environmental performance of their production is carried out using a mathematical description of the life cycle of liquid steel. It has been proved that out-of-furnace (ladle) treatment of cast iron and steel melts can rightfully be considered the best available technology, as it improves the majority of environmental indicators for production of ferrous metals. It has been shown that out-of-furnace desulfurization of cast iron reduces the yield of such waste as slag by up to 18%, the energy consumption of the process by at least 2.5%, dust emission in the casthouse by three and a half times, sulfur oxide emission by more than an order of magnitude, nitrogen oxide emission by 20%. In addition, cast iron desulfurization reduces dust emission at all stages of steelmaking from 3 to 9 times and reduces the yield of steelmaking slag by an average of 20 kg / t of steel, and out-of-furnace desulfurization of steel reduces the specific yield of steelmaking slag by almost half. The use of the calculated data will allow metallurgists to adjust the values of technological standards necessary to obtain a comprehensive environmental permit for production.
