The article gives an overview of the current studies into methods and means of preserving the Earth’s biota in the time of extensive development of mineral resources. Based on fundamental research results obtained at IPKON and on the ground of general methodology for a new school on nature-like mining technologies, the authors raise a problem on practice-oriented research aimed at creation of convergent technologies for underground extraction of solid mineral resources from thick strata. The large scale of the set problem is governed by the fact that the substance currently in use in construction of all elements in the techno-sphere is generally taken from the planet lithosphere through mining of solid mineral resources. The methodology of the problem solution consists in the deterministic development of a two-level system of theoretical approaches and practical activities. The first level is creation of nature-like functional structure of mineral wealth development as a complex nature-and-technology system comprising components that interact based on the theory of co-evolution of antagonistic systems. The second level is creation of convergent mining technologies such that their external impact is regulated by the requirement to preserve biota of natural ecosystems disturbed by mineral mining. The article informs on a convergent mining technology developed at the IPKON RAS and Research Center for Applied Geomechanics and Converging Geotechnologies, NUST MISIS’s College of Mining for mining thick rock salt deposits.
