One of the important quality parameters of the small-section rolled from the silicon-manganese steel is the properties of scale on its surface. The descaling is one of the most important technological operations preceding drawing. The quality of cleaning directly depends on the characteristics of the scale during mechanical descaling. The main characteristics of scale on the surface of the small-section rolled of silicon-manganese steels after hot rolling and after the heat treatment with separate heating without and with application of the protective atmosphere were defined. As the main indicators, were estimated a possibility of mechanically descaling and the amount of residual oxides on the surface of the metal, according to the method of the fi rm «Bekaert» (Belgium). The technique is based on comparing the results of the weighing of the test sample before and after stretching by 7% (which corresponds to the deformation of the metal in the scaler). The best ability to mechanical descaling by means (more than 84%) and a low amount of residual oxides (0.79–0.98 g/kg) is observed on silica-manganese steel after hot rolling and annealing with protective atmosphere. After annealing in the unprotected atmosphere is formed the poorly removable scale (55–65%), which is remains in large quantity (1.82–1.65 g/kg) after deformation. The formation of a hard-to-remove scale after annealing leads to use of the plasma post-treatment. A large amount of scale, which are poorly removable by mechanical method, has shown the necessity to carry out actions that contribute to the improvement of the quality of small-section rolled, — it is a using of the protective atmosphere at a heat treatment. After annealing the steel structure was consisted of a ferritic matrix and granular carbides. The effect of the presence or absence of a protective atmosphere on the structure of rolled metal was not revealed.
