Abstract

Nowadays mechanical destruction of hard rock is usually performed by disc cutters of great size (330–508 mm). The proper choice of destruction pattern, e.g. penetration, cutter spacing, etc., influences effectiveness of the process, i.e. advance rate and economical performance of mining project. The reasoned selection of proper destruction patterns requires correct calculation of cutting forces during rock breaking. In this regard, domestic recommendations are limited to V-type disc cutters with a diameter less than 300 mm, which are not widely used. It is of the current concern to undertake the research aimed to make the domestic calculation methods appropriate for prediction of forces for the modern disc cutters. This article describes the main domestic empirical methods widely applied by design agencies in mining machine engineering in calculation of forces acting on disc cutters and discusses foreign theoretical models which are reliable and widely used. Numerical experiments on the comparison of the domestic and foreign methods to calculate disc cutting forces show that the domestic methods can be added with the scale factors for re-calculation of rolling and feed forces for larger-diameter disc cutters. The mathematical processing of results obtained in the numerical experiments provides relations for calculation of scale factors. The use of scale factors will make it possible for domestic specialists to predict cutting forces on disc cutters of any type and diameter, as well as to calculate penetration rates in rock breaking processes.
