Innovative heating procedures of ingots-billets after electric slag remelting (ESR), their piercing in helical rolling mill in hollow billets and consequent rolling of hollow billets at pilger mills in 290x12 mm rough tubes are developed and put into practice. The roll pass design for the rolls of a pilger mill is also developed and put into operation to roll rough tubes. Optimal dimensions of ingots-billets for manufacture of rough tubes with 4- and 5-fold length are determined. Implementation of the complex of these investigations allowed to obtained the average metal consumption coefficient to 3.403 and to rise productivity of the tube rolling unit 8–16” with pilger mills more than by six times. It is the first case in the world practice, when production of seamless hotrolled rough tubes with dimensions 290x12 mm and with length 21–23 m, made of boron-containing steel 04Х14Т3Р1Ф-Ш (04Kh14T3R1F-Sh), has been undertaken in the conditions of Chelyabinsk Pipe Rolling Plant directly from ESR billets. This technology includes also consequent fabrication of hexagonal billet tubes of turnkey size (257+2/–3) x (6+2/–1) x (4300+80/–30) mm for compact storage in the holding basins at nuclear power stations and for transportation of worked nuclear fuel.
