BSE company has developed theoretical description of electric processes in an electric arc furnace in more systematic, practical and innovative way. It means the exact calculation of all electromagnetic and connected non-electromagnetic effects occurring in a high-current system. The new approaches include putting into practice computer optimization instead of conventional linear equations. The paper contains description of the new method, its applying to electric arc furnaces, examples of calculation and new construction of current-conducting electrode holders. Valid for the optimal design of arc furnaces as well as for other areas of physics and electrical engineering is: Only the possibility of accurate — that means local — computation of quantities leads to optimal design. The analytical comparison of dozens of alternatives becomes feasible with the computer. The practical side, respectively the experience side of the electric of the arc furnace finally gets a solid theoretical basis. BSE has developed a farreaching theoretical understanding of the electrical properties of the arc furnace and the company will offer this additional and valuable knowledge as a computation service. Applying the FNM-system it is feasible for the first time to compute all electromagnetical depending non-electromagnetical quantities considering the real geometry of the furnace.
