Abstract

Gas cleaning systems in steelworks are responsible for the extraction of dust-laden off-gases. For the control of this process, SMS Siemag has developed a new system which models the existing gas cleaning network. Gas Cleaning Assistant is an intelligent control system for secondary gas cleaning that can help to optimize the process quality and at the same time to cut energy consumption. Typical construction of the gas cleaning system and conventional control remedies are observed. This control system can be considered as a standard technical solution for all new gas cleaning systems developed by SMS Group. It can also be put into practice in the existing production units, providing serious advantages during modernization. An algorithm calculates the optimal opening positions of the exhaust air dampers and the required negative pressure. It is shown that Gas Cleaning Assis-tant is used successfully at two control production sites. Calculated and measured operation results have been compared, and it could be concluded that average savings of 2% can be reached, corresponding to several hundred thousand Euros per year.
