Abstract

Innovative, competitive and a leader in exports – that describes the German steel industry. As a fundamental supplier to key industries like the automotive, machine construction and energy sectors, it contributes decisively to Germany’s economic success. More than half of the nation’s exported products are highly steel-intensive goods. But it could be incorrect to rest on past success. In sum, it can be said that Saarland’s steel industry is well-equipped, but that it – like the German and European steel industry as a whole – faces some major challenges. No one should expect it to bring a knife to a gunfi ght. It needs a fair competitive environ-ment and freedom to make decisions – then the German steel industry can continue to be a competitive performer and one of the most important means of support in the essential transition to Industry 4.0 and, consequently, for prosperity and growth.
