The necessity for development of continuous methods of severe plastic deformation based on a combination of diff erent schemes of plastic deformation is shown. The ultrafi ne grain structure that is obtained by such exposure, provides improved mechanical properties of metals and alloys without changing their chemical composition. Based on combination of tensile and compression kinds of deformation (which exist in drawing process) with bending and twisting kinds of deformation, the methods providing ultrafi ne grain structure in processed wire are developed. The essential diff erence between the proposed methods and other methods of severe plastic deformation is the ability of continuous processing of long-size items with round cross-section in the industrial conditions, using various hardware devices and industrial equipment already applied for steel wire production. It is mentioned that these methods have diff erent eff ectiveness in obtaining the ultrafi ne grain structure in processed carbon wire and hence it has diff erent level of the mechanical properties. It can be explained by diff erent extent of impact intensity of combined deformation. The investigation of wire mechanical properties after various kinds of combined deformation impact showed wide possibilities to change its mechanical properties in a wide range.
