Abstract

This paper presents report about the change in sulphur content in the cast iron over the last 100 years. The new original technique has been developed for applying the sulphur content in the cast irons. Different methods are compared for melting and processing of cast iron scrap. The reasons for variation of sulfur content in the cast iron for the case when melting unit with cupola furnace is replaced by electric furnace are explained. Melting of cast iron in electric furnaces has been shown to off er many advantages comparing with cast iron melting in cupola furnace. It can be concluded from this study that variation in the melting technology has the real eff ect on the quality of cast iron. Finally different problems of iron melting are reported in connection with coke use, because sulphur content in-creases in cast iron due to contact with coke. However, in general experiments confi rm most of the theoretical predictions; e. g. the idea of increase of sulphur content in cast iron that has been molten in different time periods has been verified. The older is iron casting, the less is its sulphur content.
