Abstract

The electric arc furnace (EAF) is the key unit in an electric steelmaking shop, having decisive influence on annual production volume and consumption of power resources. Usually steelmaking in EAF is characterized as periodical process with interruption for scrap charging, electrode change or metal pouring. In order to decrease auxiliary technological time, it is necessary to have corresponding technical solutions put into practice. Innovation of SMS Siemag AG company — Arccess Steady (S/EAF) furnace, having principally new construction and design and combining innovative and conventional technologies, can operate in continuous mode during one week. This technology is based on longterm experience of SMS Siemag company in the field of reduction EAFs with submerged arc (more than 300 references) and steelmaking EAFs (more than 1,300 references) as well as Conarc technologies. The ultimate attention has been paid in this project to efficient combination of new environment protection and metallurgical technologies with consequent lowering of production expenses and rising of competitiveness. S/EAF type furnace is characterized by productivity higher than usual furnace by 30% and by lower power consumption owing to continuous process. In the case of charging 100% of direct reduced iron, specific power consumption diminishes by 20 kWt·h/t.
